Flat

Nearly level with a slight slope for drainage. Common on modern homes and most commercial buildings, cheap to build and gives rooftop usable space, but drainage and membrane quality are everything.

Shed

A single sloping plane, like half a gable. Simple, cheap, modern looking, and easy to drain and to fit with solar. Popular on additions, modern homes and accessory buildings.

Dutch gable

A hip roof topped with a small gable, blending the wind stability of a hip with the extra space and light of a gable. Attractive and functional, but with more seams to detail.

Butterfly

Two surfaces angling up and out from a central valley, like open wings. Striking, modern, and good for rainwater collection and solar, but the central valley is a demanding drainage point.

The major roof shapes in depth

Mansard and gambrel roofs exist mainly to create space. The mansard, a French design, has a steep lower slope and a nearly flat upper slope on all four sides, effectively adding a full extra story of living space beneath a graceful profile, which is why it appears on grand homes and buildings where floor area is precious. The gambrel, the classic barn and Dutch Colonial roof, does something similar with two sides instead of four. Both maximize interior volume cheaply, but their shallow upper slopes shed snow poorly and their tall faces catch wind, so they demand good drainage detailing and are less suited to heavy snow or high wind country.

Flat and shed roofs round out the common set. A truly flat roof is never perfectly level, it carries a slight slope so water can drain, and it relies entirely on a continuous membrane rather than overlapping shingles to stay watertight. Roof pitch: the other half of the shape
