The panel idea
All insulated roof panels run the same play: a rigid foam core bonded between two skins, so one factory-made component does the work of several site-built layers, structure or deck, insulation, and sometimes the finished roof surface itself, arriving as a panel instead of a parade of trades. The payoffs are shared: continuous insulation with no stud-and-rafter thermal bridging (the leak in most site-built R-value math), speed, panels craning into place in hours, and predictability, factory bonding beating field assembly. The trades are shared too: joints between panels become the critical details, cores are combustible or moisture-sensitive by chemistry, and repairs mean panel thinking, not shingle thinking, themes the insulation guide and materials overview frame from their own angles.
The three kinds
SIPs (structural insulated panels)
EPS or polyiso core bonded between OSB skins, and the panel IS the structure: SIP roofs span rafter-free, sheathe themselves, and insulate to R-40-plus in one component. The custom-home and timber-frame favorite, finished with any normal roofing over a vented detail.
Metal sandwich panels
Foam or mineral-wool core between steel skins, interior finish, insulation and weather surface in one lift: the warehouse, cold-storage and workshop standard, spanning purlin to purlin, cousins of the metal panel family. Patio-room and carport panels are the light-duty retail version.
Polyiso and rigid boards
Not structural, ubiquitous: the flat rigid insulation layer under nearly every commercial membrane, R-6-ish per inch, stacked and staggered to spec, tapered to build drainage slope. The quiet workhorse of the panel world.
Nail-base and vented panels
Hybrid retrofit panels, foam with an OSB nailing face, sometimes with a vent channel, that add continuous R-value over an existing deck at re-roof time: the cathedral-ceiling and old-house energy retrofit that fixes insulation from outside.
Where each fits
The sorting is honest and quick. Building new with exposed ceilings or timber frames? SIP roofs deliver the structure-plus-insulation package and clean interior planes. Warehouse, shop, cold storage, or a patio cover that should be cooler than bare metal? Sandwich panels roof it in one pass, speed and R-value per dollar unmatched at scale. Flat commercial roof? Polyiso under the membrane is simply how the assembly works, with tapered systems solving ponding at the insulation layer. Re-roofing a cathedral-ceiling house that bakes and ices? Nail-base panels over the old deck add the continuous R-value the rafter bays cannot hold, the outside-in fix for the ventilation-and-insulation problems that plague finished-ceiling roofs.
Details and care
Panel roofs live and die at their joints and edges: SIP seams want their spline-and-sealant details done exactly (and a vented over-roof in snow country, SIP ridges rot when interior moisture reaches a cold seam), sandwich-panel side laps want correct fasteners, closures and butyl runs like any screw-down metal, and polyiso wants staggered joints and dry storage (wet polyiso is dead polyiso). Ownership is mostly standard for the finish surface, but repairs are panel-scale: a crushed or soaked panel section is replaced as a unit, and moisture scanning finds wet cores before they spread. Are SIP roofs any good?
Very, when detailed right: rafter-free spans, self-sheathing structure, top-tier continuous R-value and fast dry-in make SIPs the custom and timber-frame favorite. The discipline is at the seams, spline and sealant details done exactly, plus a vented over-roof in cold climates, because interior moisture reaching a cold SIP seam is the rot mechanism behind the famous ridge failures.
What is polyiso insulation on a roof?
The flat rigid-board workhorse under nearly every commercial membrane: roughly R-6 per inch, mechanically fastened or adhered in staggered layers, and available in tapered systems that build drainage slope into the insulation itself, the standard cure for ponding. Its one commandment is dryness, in storage and in service, since saturated polyiso loses its R-value and its job.
Can insulated panels go over an existing roof?
That is the nail-base retrofit: foam panels with an OSB nailing surface (some with vent channels) installed over the old deck at re-roof time, adding continuous insulation from outside, the practical fix for cathedral ceilings and old houses whose rafter bays cannot hold enough R-value. The new roofing then installs normally over the fresh nailing face.
