What is a gable roof?

They meet at the ridge, the horizontal line along the top, which is also where a ridge vent typically exhausts attic air. The sloped edges of the roof at each end, running from the ridge down to the corners, are the rakes, and the horizontal lower edges where the gutters hang are the eaves. The triangular wall sections at each end, framed by the rakes, are the gables or gable ends, and they are wall, not roof: they are sided or bricked like the rest of the house and often hold a window or vent.

Variations on the gable
Front gable
The gable end faces the street, so the triangle is the facade. Common on Cape Cods, bungalows and craftsman homes, it puts the roof peak front and center and frames the entry.
Side gable
The slopes face front and back and the gables face the sides, the most common suburban arrangement, presenting the long eave line to the street.
Cross gable
Two gable sections meet at a right angle, as when a wing, garage or porch joins the main house. The intersection creates valleys, which need careful flashing and membrane work.
Dutch gable
A hybrid: a small gable perched on top of a hip roof, combining hip stability with gable attic space and light. A handsome, slightly more complex variation.

Advantages

Drawbacks
The gable end is a big flat sail, so in high-wind and hurricane regions a gable roof catches wind harder than a hip roof, and poorly braced gable ends can fail in extreme storms. Overhangs need proper support in windy areas, and the style is so common it can read as plain.
The honest summary is that the gable is the best all-around value in roof shapes for most climates, which is exactly why it dominates.
