What is a thatched roof?

A thatched roof is made of dry plant stems, most often water reed, wheat straw or sedge, bound in tight bundles and fastened to the roof structure in overlapping courses, butt-ends down, a foot or more thick. There are no shingles, no membrane and no metal: the plant material itself is the entire weather surface, shaped and dressed by hand, with the ridge finished in its own woven cap. It is the oldest roofing method still practiced, refined over thousands of years, and it survives not as a novelty but as a working craft, from English and Irish cottages to Japanese farmhouses, Dutch villas and African lodges.

Thatching persists because it works: a properly built thatch is genuinely waterproof, superbly insulating, made of renewable local material, and beautiful in a way that machines have never matched. It is also labor-intensive and specialized, which is why it became rare wherever industrial roofing got cheap. How thatch sheds water

A thatched roof does not soak up rain and dry out; it sheds. The stems lie parallel, angled steeply down-slope, and water runs stem to stem down the outermost few inches of the coat, dripping from butt to butt until it leaves the eave, penetrating barely a couple of inches into a foot-thick coat even in prolonged rain. Two things make this work: pitch, thatch demands a steep roof, typically 45 degrees or more, so gravity keeps the water moving, and tension, the bundles are compressed and pinned so tightly that the surface behaves like a single sprung mat, with no channels for water to follow inward.

That is why thatched roofs are steep, why their eaves and gables project generously (throwing drip clear of the walls), and why the ridge, the one line where stems cannot point downhill, gets its own sacrificial woven cap, renewed more often than the coat. The whole system is the shedding principle in its purest form: no waterproof layer anywhere, just geometry, overlap and material depth doing everything. Lifespan and upkeep

A well-laid thatch is a decades roof, not a temporary one.
