What overhangs do

How big should an overhang be?

Convention runs 12 to 24 inches at eaves and somewhat less at rakes, with climate arguing the extremes: deep overhangs (24 inches and past) earn their cost in hot-sun and heavy-rain country, prairie and craftsman styles wearing them proudly; modest overhangs suit mild climates and tight lots; and minimal-to-zero overhangs, the modern-box look, are a deliberate maintenance trade, walls that see every rain age faster, a fact their owners should buy knowingly. The engineering limit is wind: overhangs are uplift levers in storms, so hurricane country builds them shorter, ties them per the fortified rules, and details their sheathing to hold, one more case of the wind-versus-comfort trade running through roof design.
