Hip Roofs: Design, Framing, Pros and Cons
A hip roof slopes on all four sides, trading the gable triangle for a lower, stronger, wind-shrugging profile. Here is how hip roofs work, where they excel, what they cost you in attic space, and when they are the right call.
What is a hip roof?
A hip roof slopes upward from all four walls of the house, with no vertical gable ends. On a rectangular home, the two long sides carry trapezoid-shaped slopes that meet at a short ridge, while the two ends carry triangular slopes, and the sloped edges where adjacent planes meet are the hips that give the style its name. On a square building, all four slopes can meet at a single peak, forming a pyramid hip or pavilion roof. The result is a roof that wraps the whole house, with eaves, and gutters, running around the entire perimeter.
Hip roofs are the second most common roof shape in America after the gable, and the dominant choice in hurricane-prone regions, for a reason that is easy to picture: with every face sloped, wind flowing over the house is deflected up and over rather than slamming into a flat gable wall. The four-way slope also makes the structure self-bracing, each plane leans on its neighbors, giving the hip an inherent stability the gable needs extra bracing to match. Anatomy of a hip roof
The hip has a few parts of its own beyond the standard ridge and eaves. The hips themselves are the external sloped edges where two roof planes meet, running from the corners of the building up toward the ridge, and they are capped with hip caps much as a ridge is capped. On a standard rectangular hip, the ridge is shorter than the building, since the end slopes consume part of the length. Where a hip roof wraps an L-shaped house, the inside corners create valleys, which as always are the hardest-working drainage channels on the roof and need proper membrane underneath, as our valley guide explains.
Framing a hip is more involved than framing a gable: it needs hip rafters running to the corners, jack rafters of varying lengths filling in the triangles, or engineered hip truss systems, which is part of why hip roofs cost somewhat more to build, as our framing guide touches on. The attic beneath a hip is smaller and more pinched at the edges than a gable attic of the same footprint, and with no gable ends there is no natural spot for end windows or big gable vents, so hips rely on soffit intake with ridge or roof vents for airflow.
Variations on the hip
Simple / standard hip
The classic: trapezoids on the long sides, triangles on the ends, a short ridge on top. Clean, low-profile, and the benchmark hip form on rectangular homes.
Pyramid (pavilion) hip
On a square footprint the four slopes meet at a single point, a pyramid. Common on pavilions, gazebos, porch roofs and towers as well as compact homes.
Cross hip
Two hip sections meeting at right angles over an L- or T-shaped house, creating valleys at the inside corners. The hip counterpart of the cross gable.
Dutch gable (hybrid)
A hip roof with a small gable set on top, buying back some attic space, light and venting while keeping mostly-hip wind behavior. A popular best-of-both compromise.
There is also the half-hip or jerkinhead, a gable whose peak is clipped back into a small hip, sturdier than a full gable end and quirkier than a plain hip. Each variation manages the same tradeoffs, wind performance, attic volume, complexity, in different proportions, and the valleys that appear in cross-hip layouts deserve the same respect they get on any roof: that is where the water concentrates.
Hip roof pros and cons
Advantages
Best-in-class wind resistance, no flat end walls to catch gusts, which is why insurers in hurricane states often discount hip-roofed homes. Inherently stable, self-bracing structure. Eaves shade and shed water on all four sides, protecting every wall. Handsome, grounded, low-slung look.
Drawbacks
More complex framing means higher build cost than a gable. Less attic volume, and awkward pinched edges inside. No gable ends for windows or big vents, so ventilation needs more care. More hips and (on cross layouts) valleys mean more linear feet of capping and flashing to install and maintain.
The wind advantage is not folklore: wind-engineering studies and hurricane damage surveys consistently find hip roofs outperforming gables in extreme wind, and many coastal insurers price that difference into premiums, sometimes substantially. If you are building or buying in hurricane country, the hip roof, and the insurance paperwork proving you have one, is genuinely worth money. Outside high-wind regions, the choice tilts back toward the cheaper, roomier gable, which is why both shapes remain everywhere.
Why hips win in wind
The physics is straightforward. Wind hitting a gable end meets a tall, flat, vertical sail that takes the load head-on and transfers it into the roof structure at its weakest orientation; in extreme storms, unbraced gable ends can rack and fail, sometimes peeling the roof from the end inward. Wind hitting a hip meets a slope that deflects the flow up and over the building, dramatically reducing the pressure on any single face. The four-sided geometry also means the roof planes brace one another continuously, so loads are shared rather than concentrated. Lower profile, deflecting faces, mutual bracing: the hip is simply the better aerodynamic shape.

If a storm-resistant roof is the priority, shape, fastening, sealed roof deck, and material all stack together, and the hip is the shape that starts the stack ahead.
Roofing and caring for a hip roof
Hip roofs take every standard material, architectural shingles, metal, tile and slate, with one practical note: all those hips and the shorter ridge mean proportionally more cap pieces and edge detail than a gable of the same size, and cross-hip layouts add valleys, so material waste and labor run slightly higher. The critical details are familiar: quality underlayment everywhere, membrane in any valleys, correct drip edge along the wraparound eaves, and well-seated hip and ridge caps, which take the brunt of wind and are the first thing to check after a storm.
Because a hip attic has no gable vents, confirm the ventilation math actually works, generous soffit intake all around (the hip has soffits on every side, an advantage) paired with ridge venting along its shorter ridge or supplemental vents, as our ventilation guide covers. Keep the perimeter gutters clear, inspect the hip caps and any valleys periodically, and a hip roof will serve as long as its material allows, standing steadier in the worst weather than almost any other shape.
