The two shapes in brief

A gable roof has two slopes meeting at a ridge, leaving a vertical triangular wall, the gable, at each end of the house. A hip roof slopes on all four sides, with no vertical ends: the planes rise from every wall and meet at a shorter ridge or a single peak. From the street, the difference is easy to spot, the gable shows you a triangle of siding at its end; the hip shows you roofing on every face. Between them, these two shapes cover the large majority of American homes, and nearly every other pitched style is a variation on one of them.

Both are proven over centuries, both shed water and snow well, and both take any roofing material, so neither is a mistake. The choice is a genuine tradeoff, and it turns mainly on three things: what you pay to build it, how it behaves in severe wind, and how much usable attic it leaves you. Read down the table and the pattern emerges: the gable wins the economy columns, the hip wins the weather columns, and looks are a matter of taste. That is why the national map sorts the way it does, gables dominating inland, hips overrepresented along the hurricane coasts.

Cost and construction

The gable is the cheaper roof to build, and it is not close to a coin flip. Two identical rectangular slopes, straight rafters or simple trusses, and short, straight cuts make the gable fast, material-efficient and forgiving. The hip needs hip rafters running to every corner, jack rafters of graduated lengths, or engineered hip trusses, plus more cap and flashing footage along its four sloped edges, so both framing labor and roofing labor run higher. On a re-roof, the difference persists in a smaller way: the hip has more edges and caps to detail, and cross-hip layouts add valleys.

How much more depends on the house and region, but the direction never changes: for the same footprint and material, the hip costs more to frame and somewhat more to roof. If budget is the deciding constraint and you are not in a high-wind zone, that alone often settles the question in favor of the gable, which is exactly how it earned its place as the default American roof. Wind and weather: the hip advantage

In severe wind, the hip is the better roof, and the evidence is consistent from wind-tunnel engineering to post-hurricane damage surveys. The gable end is a tall, flat sail that takes gusts head-on, and unbraced gable ends are a known failure point in extreme storms, once the end racks, the roof can peel from that end inward. The hip presents a slope to wind from every direction, deflecting the flow over the building, and its four planes brace one another continuously. That is why hurricane-zone builders default to hips, why gable-end bracing is a standard retrofit in storm country, and why many coastal insurers give wind-mitigation discounts to hip-roofed homes that can meaningfully reduce premiums year after year.

Against rain and snow the two shapes are effectively equal, both shed superbly down their pitched planes, though the hip adds one quiet benefit: eaves, and therefore gutters and shade, wrap all four walls, protecting siding and foundations on every side rather than two. Attic space and ventilation: the gable advantage

Inside the roof, the tables turn. The gable encloses a full-height triangular attic running the length of the house, usable for storage, mechanicals, or, with rafter framing, even conversion, and its vertical gable ends take windows and big vents naturally. The hip attic is smaller for the same footprint and pinches to nothing at the edges where the end slopes come down, and with no gable ends, there is nowhere for end windows or gable vents. Ventilation follows the same logic. A gable ventilates almost by default, ridge vent along its full-length ridge, soffit intake below, gable vents as a bonus. Choose a gable if…

Budget leads, you want maximum attic space or a future conversion, your region sees ordinary wind, and you like the classic peaked look. It is the value pick and the reason most of America lives under one.

Choose a hip if…

You build or buy in hurricane or high-wind country, want the insurance discount and the calmer storm behavior, prefer the low, tailored profile, and accept a smaller attic and a higher build price for it.

For most homeowners the shape is already decided by the house you own, and the practical move is to play the hand well: brace the gable ends if you live with a gable in wind country, verify the wind-mitigation discount if you live under a hip, and give either shape the material, underlayment and ventilation it deserves.
