What is steel roofing?

Steel roofing is sheet steel, rolled thin, protected against rust, and formed into roofing panels or shingles. It is far and away the most common metal on American roofs, the material behind most standing seam systems, most corrugated and ribbed panels, and most metal shingles, because it delivers the best strength per dollar of any roofing metal. Steel is harder than aluminum, resists hail and foot traffic better, spans structure stiffly, and costs meaningfully less than aluminum, copper or zinc.

Bare steel, of course, rusts, which is why every steel roofing product is really a layered system: a steel core, a sacrificial metallic coating bonded to both faces, and usually a factory paint finish on top. Understanding those layers, and the words on the spec sheet that describe them, is most of what a smart steel-roof buyer needs, and it is exactly what separates a 20-year panel from a 60-year one. The coatings that make steel last

The metallic coating is the heart of steel roofing. Galvanized steel is coated in zinc, which protects both as a barrier and sacrificially, the zinc corrodes preferentially, protecting cut edges and scratches. Coating weight matters: G-90 (0.90 ounces of zinc per square foot) is the roofing standard; lighter G-60 belongs on sheds, not homes. Galvalume wraps the steel in a 55% aluminum, 45% zinc alloy that combines aluminum barrier protection with zinc self-healing, and it outlasts galvanized by roughly half again or more in most exposures, which is why nearly all premium steel roofing is Galvalume-based. Over the metallic coating goes the paint system, and here the abbreviation to know is PVDF (Kynar 500 and equivalents): the premium fluoropolymer finish that holds color and gloss for decades and shrugs off UV chalking. The budget alternative, polyester or SMP paint, costs less and fades faster. A Galvalume base under a PVDF finish is the specification behind most 40-year-plus steel roof warranties, and asking those two questions, what coating, what paint, cuts through most marketing on any steel roofing quote.

Gauges and profiles

Gauge (thickness)

Steel roofing runs from 29 gauge (thinnest, agricultural panels) through 26 gauge (the residential sweet spot) to 24 gauge (premium standing seam and commercial). Lower number = thicker metal = more dent resistance, stiffness and cost. For homes, 26 is solid; 24 is the upgrade for hail country and long panels.

Profiles

Steel takes every metal form: standing seam panels with hidden clips, exposed-fastener ribbed and corrugated panels, stamped metal shingles and tiles, and stone-coated steel that mimics shake or tile. The profile drives the price and the fastening story more than the steel itself.

Panels arrive with the coating and finish factory-applied, so field cutting deserves care, cut edges rely on the zinc’s sacrificial protection, and installers should use shears or nibblers rather than abrasive saws that burn coatings and shower hot filings that rust-spot the finish. Drawbacks

Rusts where coatings are breached or spent, cut edges, scratches and fastener wallows need attention. Loses to aluminum in salt-spray coastal environments. Heavier than aluminum (though still light per square versus tile). Budget 29-gauge exposed-fastener steel earns metal roofing its cheap-barn reputation; the spec matters.

The honest picture: for most inland homes, steel is the metal to buy, the performance is there at the best price, and the failure stories almost always trace to thin gauge, light coatings, cheap paint or exposed-fastener shortcuts rather than to steel itself. Specify Galvalume, decent gauge, PVDF paint and a hidden-fastener profile, and steel is a decades-long, low-drama roof.

Steel vs aluminum and the other metals

Buying and caring for a steel roof

Buying well is mostly specification: Galvalume (or G-90 galvanized at minimum), 26 gauge or better for homes, PVDF finish, hidden-fastener profile where budget allows, and an installer who works metal weekly, with flashing details and underlayment to match. If the quote cannot name the coating, gauge and paint system, keep shopping, those three lines are the roof. On the exposed-fastener end, accept the re-screwing maintenance cycle knowingly, or step up to standing seam and retire it.

Care is light: keep debris out of valleys, touch up deep scratches with manufacturer paint so the coating stays sealed, watch cut edges and penetrations during routine inspections, and never let dissimilar metals or treated lumber sit in contact with the panels (galvanic corrosion is real, copper wire, lead flashing and ACQ lumber are the usual suspects).
