What is corrugated metal roofing?
Corrugated metal roofing is sheet metal rolled into a repeating wave, the corrugation, that gives thin steel remarkable stiffness. The classic round-wave profile has covered American barns, mills and homesteads since the 1800s, and its modern descendants (round wave, box rib, and the closely related ribbed R-panels) remain the most affordable way to put metal over a roof. Sheets typically cover two to three feet of width, run up to and beyond 16 feet long, and fasten the old-fashioned way: screws driven straight through the panel face into the framing or deck, sealed by rubber-gasketed washers.

Advantages
Lowest-cost metal roofing by a wide margin. Light, stiff, fast to install, and strong enough to span open framing. 30-to-50-year panel life in quality Galvalume. Fire-resistant, snow-shedding, fully recyclable, and charming in the right architectural setting.
Drawbacks
Thousands of exposed gasketed screws that weather, loosen and eventually leak, plan on tightening and gasket replacement roughly every decade. Horizontal laps on long roofs are future maintenance lines. Thin gauges dent in hail and oil-can visually. Rain noise on open framing (a deck and underlayment quiet it).
The pattern is consistent: corrugated wins wherever economy, speed and spanning ability matter more than zero-maintenance, which is why it owns the agricultural world and plays a supporting role on homes. The failures people attribute to it, leaking screw lines, rust at cut edges, almost always trace to the cheapest possible spec (29-gauge, light coating, bargain screws) installed carelessly, not to the profile itself.
What corrugated metal costs
Corrugated is the entry price of metal roofing: materials commonly run a fraction of standing seam, and installed cost lands near, sometimes below, architectural shingles on simple structures, especially where panels span purlins and no decking is needed. The spec drives the spread: 29-gauge lighter-coated panels at the bottom, 26-gauge Galvalume with PVDF paint meaningfully higher, aluminum higher again. Add the trim package (ridge, eave, rake, gable), fasteners (buy the good ones, long-life screws with quality washers are cheap insurance), and closure strips that seal the wavy profile at ridge and eaves. Budget honestly for the lifecycle too: an exposed-fastener roof carries a small recurring cost, an hour of screw-tightening per few squares every 8 to 12 years, and eventual gasket renewal, that hidden-fastener roofs do not. On a barn that is trivial; on a large home it is worth pricing against the standing-seam premium before deciding.
Installation done right
Corrugated rewards care in a few specific places. Fasteners: drive screws into the flat (or per the panel maker’s spec), perpendicular and snug, compressing the washer just to a slight bulge, overdriven screws crush and split washers, underdriven ones never seal, and crooked ones leak from day one. Laps: side-lap one full corrugation minimum with laps away from prevailing weather; avoid horizontal laps entirely by ordering full-length sheets when the roof allows. Edges: use matching closure strips at ridge and eave, real trim rather than improvised bends, and cut with shears or nibblers, never abrasive saws that burn coatings and seed rust spots.
On homes, install over a solid deck with quality underlayment, which quiets rain, backstops the screw lines, and adds a second water barrier under the laps. Pitch matters: keep the classic round wave to 3:12 and steeper (low-slope versions and sealant-taped laps exist, but membranes or seamed metal serve low pitches better). Maintenance
The list is short but real: walk the roof (or glass it from a ladder) every year or two and after big storms; tighten any backed-out screws and replace weathered washers, wholesale, not one at a time, once they start failing in numbers; touch up scratches and cut edges with manufacturer paint; keep valleys, laps and gutters clear of debris that traps moisture against the panels; and watch dissimilar-metal contacts (copper, lead, treated lumber) that corrode steel galvanically. Why do corrugated roofs leak?
