Silicone
The ponding-water champion: moisture-cured, UV-immortal, sits under standing water indefinitely. High solids versions roll thick in one coat. Downsides: dirt pickup dulls reflectivity, nothing sticks to old silicone except silicone, and it is slippery wet. The premium flat-roof default.
Acrylic (elastomeric)
The value reflective: water-based, easy handling, bright white, solid UV performance, the “elastomeric roof coating” of every hardware aisle. Limits: cannot pond (it re-softens), needs decent cure weather, thinner films per coat. King on slopes-to-shed metal and mod-bit.
Aluminized asphalt
The classic silver coat for mod-bit and BUR: asphalt-compatible, reflective-ish, cheap, the maintenance coat those systems were built around. Not a membrane-former; a sunscreen and rejuvenator.
Urethane & specialty
Tough, abrasion-resistant base and traffic coats, often under silicone tops; plus primers, seam-grade mastics and the butyl tapes that do detail duty. The supporting cast every serious coating spec draws from.

GACO (Firestone/Holcim) built the residential silicone category, GacoRoof is the name homeowners know, with high-solids pro lines behind it. Henry owns the hardware-store shelf across every chemistry: Tropi-Cool silicones, Enviro-White acrylics, and the 587/aluminized asphalt standards, competent products whose grade (pro vs retail) matters more than the logo. APOC runs the same spread with a contractor tilt (the 243/252 aluminized lines, elastomerics, silicones). KARNAK, Kool Seal, Black Jack, Jetcoat populate the value tiers, real products, thinner films, shorter warranted lives. The honest brand verdict: within a chemistry and solids class, the majors perform closer than marketing suggests, and the meaningful comparisons are solids content (60%+ silicone versus 30% bargain), warranted system vs bucket, and the adhesion list on the spec sheet against your actual roof, three lines that outrank the label every time.
Matching coating to roof
Flat with ponding: silicone, full stop, the chemistry built for standing water, detailed in our silicone guide. Why prep outranks product
Every coating failure investigation finds the same culprits, and they are never the bucket: coating over dirt (adhesion loss), over moisture (blisters), over unrepaired seams and details (telegraphed leaks), skipped primer on chemistry that demanded it, and films rolled thin to stretch coverage. Proper sequence, wash, dry, repair, prime, detail seams and penetrations with mastic and fabric, then coat to the specified mils, verified wet-film-gauge thick, is nine-tenths of the outcome; the brand is the last tenth. What is the best roof coating?

Within a chemistry, solids content, warranted-system status and the adhesion chart against your roof outrank the label.
Is silicone or acrylic roof coating better?
Silicone wins standing water (it cures by moisture and ignores ponding), UV endurance and one-coat thickness, at premium price with dirt-pickup and recoat-only-with-silicone caveats. Acrylic wins cost, handling and bright reflectivity on roofs that drain. The ponding behavior of the roof makes the choice more than preference does.
Can you coat asphalt shingles?
No, reputable practice does not coat shingle roofs: films trap moisture in a system designed to breathe, manufacturers void warranties, and “shingle rejuvenation” pitches are a documented scam corridor. Shingles get maintenance, repair or replacement; coatings belong on flat, metal and asphalt low-slope systems.
How long do roof coatings last?
By chemistry, film thickness and prep: quality high-solids silicone systems run 15-to-20-year warranted lives; acrylic systems 10 to 15 with recoats; aluminized maintenance coats 3 to 7 by exposure. Bargain thin-mil buckets deliver bargain thin-mil years. Recoating a sound system near end-of-life resets the clock economically, that is the whole appeal of the model.
Are hardware-store roof coatings any good?
