Panels: the unit of metal roofing

Unlike shingles, which go on one small piece at a time, metal roofing goes on as panels, long formed sheets that each cover a strip of roof from one to three feet wide and often the full ridge-to-eave run in a single piece. The panel profile, the shape rolled into the sheet, is the fundamental choice in any metal roof: it determines how the panels join, whether the screws show, how the roof handles water at low pitches, what the finished roof looks like, and a large share of what it costs. Two roofs of identical steel can differ by double in price and decades in service life purely on profile.

The panel types

Corrugated (wavy)

The original: sinusoidal waves, screwed down through the face. Cheap, strong for its weight, endlessly practical, the barn, shed and porch classic, covered fully in our corrugated guide.

Ribbed / R-panel / PBR

Flat pans between raised trapezoidal ribs, screwed through the face. The workhorse of agricultural and light-commercial roofs: more coverage per sheet than corrugated, fast to install, economical.

Standing seam

Flat pans joined at raised seams with hidden clips, no exposed fasteners at all. The premium residential and commercial profile, 40 to 70 year class, detailed in our standing seam guide.

5V crimp

Flat panels with V-shaped crimps at the laps, a traditional Southern coastal look, exposed-fastened, simple and breezy on cottages and porches.

Metal shingles & tiles

Structural & specialty

Thicker structural panels that span purlins without decking (common on pole barns), curved and tapered panels for arches and turrets, and insulated sandwich panels for commercial buildings.

Sizes, gauges and materials

Widths: corrugated and ribbed sheets typically cover 24 to 36 inches net; standing seam panels run 12 to 18 inches, narrower panels look crisper and resist oil canning better. Lengths: factory sheets come in stock lengths (8, 10, 12 feet and up), while quality installers order or roll-form panels cut to the exact eave-to-ridge run, eliminating horizontal laps, every horizontal lap on a roof is a future maintenance line, so full-length panels are worth real money. Materials: most panels are Galvalume-coated steel under a paint finish (PVDF for premium, polyester for budget); aluminum versions serve the salt coast (aluminum guide); and copper and zinc appear in custom architectural work (copper guide). Exposed vs hidden fastening: the great divide

Every panel profile falls on one side of a line that matters more than brand, color or even gauge. Exposed-fastener panels (corrugated, ribbed, 5V) are screwed through the face into the structure, thousands of gasketed screws whose rubber washers weather, shrink and loosen over 10 to 20 years as the panels thermally cycle, committing the roof to periodic re-screwing and gasket replacement. Hidden-fastener panels (standing seam, interlocking shingles) attach with concealed clips or locks, no washer ever sees sunlight, and the maintenance cycle largely disappears, at a price premium of roughly half again or more.

Neither side is wrong; they serve different buildings. A barn, shed or budget re-roof takes exposed fasteners knowingly and re-screws once a decade. A home you plan to keep deserves the hidden-fastener conversation, because the premium buys out the entire washer-failure mode for the life of the roof. Wherever a quote lands, make sure it says which side of the line it is on, and that you chose it on purpose.

Choosing the right panel

By building: homes lean standing seam or metal shingles (hidden fasteners, architectural looks); barns and outbuildings lean ribbed and corrugated (economy, speed, structural spans); porches and accents take corrugated or 5V for charm. By climate: hail country favors thicker steel; salt coast demands aluminum; heavy snow loves the clean shedding of standing seam with snow guards; hot sun rewards PVDF-finished reflective colors from our colors guide. Buying and installing panels

Buy panels cut to your actual roof, full-length wherever possible, with the trim package (ridge, eave, rake, valley, gable, boots) from the same system, mismatched or improvised trim is where panel roofs leak first. Confirm coating, gauge and paint in writing, insist on same-system screws with quality washers for exposed-fastener work, and use an installer fluent in metal: shears not abrasive saws, correct screw torque (snug the washer, never crush it), straight screw lines, and clean panel handling, the craft our metal installation guide walks through.
