What is a ridge vent?
A ridge vent is a vent that runs along the ridge, the horizontal peak line where the two slopes of a roof meet at the top. Rather than a box or fan poking up from the roof, it is a low-profile, continuous vent installed along the length of the ridge and then covered by the ridge cap shingles, so from the ground it is nearly invisible and blends into the roofline. During installation, a slot is cut along the peak of the roof deck, the ridge vent material is laid over that slot, and the ridge caps go over the top, creating a continuous opening at the very highest point of the roof where warm air naturally wants to escape.
The ridge vent is the exhaust component of a roof’s ventilation system, and its placement at the peak is what makes it so effective. Because hot air rises and the ridge is the highest point of the attic, the ridge vent sits exactly where the hottest, most moisture-laden attic air collects, giving it a natural, continuous path out. How ridge vents work
Ridge vents work by harnessing two natural forces, with no moving parts or electricity required. The first is the stack effect: warm air rises, so the hot air in the attic naturally floats up to the ridge and flows out through the vent at the peak, while cooler outside air is drawn in low through the soffit vents to replace it, creating a continuous convective loop. The second is wind: as wind passes over the peak of the roof, it creates a slight suction at the ridge that actively pulls air out of the vent. Together, these mean a ridge vent is quietly exhausting hot, humid attic air whenever there is a temperature difference or a breeze, which is nearly always.
The great advantage of this design is that the exhaust is continuous and even, spread along the entire ridge rather than concentrated at a few points. This ventilates the whole attic uniformly, with no hot pockets left stagnant between widely spaced vents, and it does so silently and passively for the life of the roof. Because it works with the roof’s natural airflow rather than fighting it, a properly sized ridge vent paired with adequate soffit intake is one of the most effective and reliable ways to ventilate an attic, which is why it has largely replaced older exhaust methods on new and re-roofed homes.
Why ridge vents are the preferred exhaust
Ridge vents have become the standard exhaust vent for pitched roofs because they solve several problems of older methods at once. Compared with the box vents (also called louvers or turtle vents) that dot many older roofs, ridge vents ventilate more evenly, because a continuous vent along the whole ridge flushes the entire attic, whereas a handful of box vents leave dead zones between them. They are also far less visible, blending into the ridge line instead of studding the roof with bumps. And with fewer penetrations through the roof, there are fewer potential leak points, since a well-installed ridge vent is integrated into the peak rather than cut into the field of the roof.
Ridge vents also compare favorably with powered options. Attic fans and powered vents use electricity and have a motor that can fail, and if not carefully balanced with intake they can even pull conditioned air from the house or backdraft. A ridge vent needs no power, has nothing to break, and works continuously and quietly. For most homes, a ridge-and-soffit system, continuous exhaust at the peak, continuous intake at the eaves, provides excellent, maintenance-free ventilation using only natural airflow, which is exactly why it is the configuration most roofers now install by default.
Ridge vents and the other vent types
Ridge vent
Continuous exhaust along the peak, even and invisible, no power or moving parts. The modern standard for pitched roofs, best paired with continuous soffit intake. Covered by the ridge caps so it blends into the roofline.
Box / louver vents
Individual vents placed near the ridge on the roof field. They work but ventilate less evenly than a continuous ridge vent, leaving dead zones, and add visible bumps and more penetrations. Common on older roofs.
Soffit vents (intake)
Not an alternative but the partner: the intake side, down at the eaves, that a ridge vent needs to work. Air enters at the soffits and exits at the ridge. A ridge vent without adequate soffit intake cannot perform.
Gable & powered vents
Gable vents in the end walls and powered attic fans are other approaches, each with tradeoffs. Mixing exhaust types can short-circuit airflow, so a ridge-and-soffit system is usually kept as its own balanced pair rather than combined with others.

The key point is that a ridge vent is an exhaust vent, and it performs only when matched with enough intake at the soffits, the two are a system, and it is generally best not to mix multiple exhaust types on the same attic, which can disrupt the intended airflow rather than improve it.
Balancing intake and exhaust
A ridge vent is only as good as the intake feeding it, which is the single most important thing to understand about it. Ventilation is a flow, air must enter as fast as it leaves, so a ridge vent needs a roughly balanced amount of intake at the soffits to actually move air. If the soffit intake is inadequate or blocked, a ridge vent cannot draw properly, and in a poorly balanced system it may even pull air from inside the house through gaps rather than from outside, defeating the purpose. This is why the golden rule of attic ventilation is to balance intake and exhaust, with intake at least equal to exhaust, and why soffit vents must be kept clear.
Getting this balance right is a matter of sizing the ridge vent and the soffit intake to the attic and to each other, and keeping the soffit vents unobstructed by insulation or paint. A roofer sizes and installs the system so the two work together, which is why ventilation is designed as a whole rather than by adding vents piecemeal. When the balance is right, the attic breathes continuously, protecting the roof deck, preventing ice dams, reducing summer heat and extending the roof’s life, all passively. When it is wrong, adding a ridge vent alone may not fix the problem, which is why the intake side deserves equal attention.
Installation and care

The main things that matter are correct installation, an adequately sized slot, the right vent product, proper integration under the ridge caps so it sheds water while venting air, and the balanced soffit intake to feed it. A poorly installed ridge vent, with too small a slot or inadequate weather baffling, can under-ventilate or, rarely, let weather in, which is why installation quality matters here as everywhere on the roof.
