Two materials, one look
Clay tile is fired earthenware, shaped and kiln-hardened the way it has been for millennia: the terra cotta barrels of Spanish and Mediterranean architecture, color burned through the body, essentially a ceramic. Concrete tile is cast mortar, sand, cement, pigment, molded into barrel, flat and slate-look profiles and cured, the 20th-century value engineering of the same silhouette. The pattern: clay buys permanence, color truth and pedigree at premium price; concrete buys the silhouette at value price with a middle-of-the-road service life. Both share tile’s structural demand and its walking fragility, and both depend on the same underlayment story below.
The color and aging divide
The deepest practical difference is what the decades do. The clay color is the fired body itself, terra cotta at eighty years is terra cotta, weathered to patina rather than faded, which is why historic districts and century-minded owners specify it. The concrete color is pigment at the surface (through-body blends help but do not equal firing), and decades of UV and rain soften it toward gray while the surface slowly erodes, respectable aging, but aging. Concrete also drinks more water, feeding moss in damp climates and adding real weight when saturated. None of this is disqualifying; all of it belongs in a decision measured in half-centuries.
Climate behavior
Hot and sunny (the tile heartland): both excel, thermal mass and under-tile airflow beating heat the way our cool-roof guide describes, with the UV indifference of clay giving it the edge on the longest horizons. Freeze-thaw country: concrete is generally robust; clay must be specified to grade (ASTM Grade 1 for severe freeze), because porous low-grade clay spalls in northern winters, the classic mis-specification. Coastal: both shrug salt, clay famously so. Hail and wind: both brittle to major hail (tile-country insurers know), both excellent in wind when properly fastened, with hurricane-zone attachment schedules mattering more than material. And everywhere: the real waterproofing is the underlayment beneath, whose 30-to-50-year life, not that of the tile, usually schedules the major service event, tiles lifted, membrane renewed, tiles relaid.

The decision tree runs honestly: structure first (both weights demand engineering sign-off on anything not built for tile, per the framing conversation); then horizon and budget, clay for the century house, the historic district, the color that must not fade; concrete for the tile look at accessible cost on a 40-to-60-year frame; then climate grade specified in writing. Ownership is shared tile discipline: stay off the roof (breakage is the number-one tile wound), keep valleys and the under-tile channels clear, replace cracked tiles promptly from attic stock, and plan the underlayment renewal as the mid-life event it is. Is concrete tile cheaper than clay?
Meaningfully, concrete typically runs half to two-thirds of clay installed, which is its entire proposition: the Mediterranean silhouette and tile durability class at value pricing. The clay premium buys the century lifespan, permanent color and historic authenticity. Weight and installation costs are comparable; the material and horizon make the difference.
Can my roof hold tile?
Only an engineer can answer: both materials run 600 to 1,200 pounds per square, several times asphalt, and homes framed for shingles need verification and often reinforcement before either goes up. Existing tile homes re-tile freely. Lightweight concrete profiles exist for marginal structures, trading some mass for feasibility.
Does clay tile crack in cold climates?
Low-grade clay can: porous tile absorbs water and spalls under freeze-thaw, the classic northern mis-specification. Severe-weather clay (ASTM Grade 1) is made for it and serves cold climates well; concrete is generally freeze-robust by nature. In either material, the grade belongs in the contract in freeze country.
Why is walking on tile roofs a problem?
Both materials are brittle underfoot, and careless foot traffic, trades, satellite installers, pressure washers, is the leading cause of tile damage. Tile-literate access (walking pads, load spread, hip and valley routes) and staying off entirely where possible are ownership rules one and two, with cracked tiles swapped promptly from attic stock.
