What polycarbonate roofing is

Polycarbonate is the transparent engineering plastic of safety glazing and riot shields, formed into roofing panels that pass light while shrugging impacts that shatter glass and crack acrylic, hail included, at a tenth of glass weight. Its roofing niche is exactly the spaces where our outdoor structures guide and pergola guide keep pointing: shelter that must not become shade. The one chemistry catch: raw polycarbonate yellows and embrittles under UV, so quality panels carry a co-extruded UV-protective layer on the sun face, the invisible feature that separates ten-year warranties from two-summer regrets, and the reason “this side up” printing on the film is not decoration.

Panel types

Multiwall (twin/triple-wall)

The workhorse: hollow-channel sheets, 6 to 25mm, whose air cells insulate (real R-value for greenhouses and sunrooms) and diffuse light softly. Light, rigid, and the standard for patio covers and glazing-style roofs; channels must be end-taped against insects and algae.

Corrugated polycarbonate

The wavy sheets of the hardware aisle (Suntuf and kin): cheap, tough, fastened like corrugated metal with the same wave profiles, the pergola-and-shed favorite in clear, bronze and opal tints.

Solid sheet

Glass-clear flat panels for canopies, walkway covers and design glazing, maximum clarity, priced and specified closer to architectural glazing than roofing.

Tints and opals

Clear maximizes light (and heat), bronze and gray cut glare and solar gain, opal/white diffuses shadowless bright shade, the patio-comfort pick, tint choice being the category version of the cool-roof decision.

Where polycarbonate belongs, and where not

Its home turf: patio and deck covers (rain stops, light stays), pergola conversions, greenhouses and grow structures (multiwall insulation plus diffusion is the greenhouse standard), carports and walkways, shed and workshop daylighting (a clear panel course in a metal roof, the poor man’s skylight), and commercial industrial daylighting panels within metal roof systems. Where it does not belong: as primary roofing over living space (building code, fire classing and longevity all point elsewhere), on dead-flat installs (it needs slope and its spans sag without support), and anywhere the no-UV-layer bargain sheet is being asked to last, the aisle trap behind most yellowed, brittle five-year-old patio covers.

The installation rules

Polycarbonate fails at installation sins, not material limits, and the rules are few and absolute. Expansion: the panels move several millimeters per meter across a temperature swing, so holes are drilled oversized, screws snug but never crushed, and edges float in glazing bars or generous laps, panels screwed tight crack at every fastener by August. Fasteners: purpose-made screws with EPDM-washered caps, in the crown of corrugations (per the exposed-fastener craft), into purlins spaced to the panel span tables, sag between skimpy purlins is the other classic failure. Orientation and sealing: UV face to the sun, multiwall channels running down-slope, ends taped (solid tape up top, vented below) and capped so the cells stay clear. Slope: a few degrees minimum, more in leaf and snow country. Follow the sheet-maker tables and the material serves its warranted decade-plus; improvise and it teaches the physics lesson by spring. Is polycarbonate roofing any good?

How long do polycarbonate panels last?

Quality UV-protected panels carry 10-to-15-year warranties and commonly serve longer, weathering gracefully. Bargain sheets without the UV co-extrusion are the two-to-five-year yellowing stories that give the material an undeserved reputation. Installation discipline, expansion gaps, proper fasteners, adequate purlins, decides the rest.

Why did my polycarbonate panels crack?

Almost always fastening: screws driven tight through unenlarged holes clamp a material that must expand and contract several millimeters per meter with temperature, and the panels crack at every fixing by the first hot season. Oversized holes, washered cap screws driven snug-not-tight, and floating edges are the whole cure, straight from the span-and-fixing tables.

Which polycarbonate tint should I choose?

Clear for maximum light (greenhouses, dark corners, winter climates), bronze or gray to cut glare and heat on sun-baked patios, and opal/white for bright, shadowless diffused shade, the outdoor-dining favorite. Tint is the comfort decision: it sets how the space feels at 2 PM in July more than any other choice on the order.

Can polycarbonate be used on a house roof?

Not as primary roofing over living space, codes, fire classification and longevity all point to conventional coverings, but it earns its place adjacent: patio and porch covers, sunroom and greenhouse glazing, and daylighting panels set within shed and outbuilding metal roofs. Treat it as engineered glazing for light-hungry shelter, not as shingle substitute.
