The mounting conflict

Installers of dishes and antennas optimize for signal; your roof optimizes for shedding water, and the standard quick install, lag bolts through shingles, dab of silicone from the van, serves the first and quietly bills the second: those lags flex under wind load on a lever arm (the mast), working their holes larger each storm, while the surface caulk ages exactly as our sealant guide predicts. The Starlink boom re-ran this movie on a million roofs. The resolution is the same as for solar: equipment mounting is a roofing task with electronics attached, and the roofing half, structure, flashing, placement, deserves the standards of the trade, not the leftovers of the signal visit.

Into structure, never just deck

Mast mounts lag into rafters or blocking, located and hit, not guessed: a mast in half-inch sheathing is a lever waiting for wind. Pilot holes, structural screws, torque, the boring fundamentals.

Flashed, not caulked

Proper mounts sit on flashed bases integrated into the courses, or over butyl-sealed plates with counter-flashing, the flashing standard in miniature. Caulk finishes the detail; it never is the detail.

Placement with the roof in mind

Near the ridge shortens the moment arm and eases access; clear of valleys and drainage paths keeps concentrations away from the penetration; and on standing seam, clamp mounts make the whole question moot, zero holes.

Cable entries too

The coax and power runs deserve their own drip loops and sealed entry boots, wall entries preferred over roof entries, since the second penetration leaks as readily as the first.

The non-penetrating options

Often the best mount makes no hole at all: chimney straps ring masonry without piercing anything (mind the flashing zone below); gable and fascia mounts put the lags into vertical wall framing, wall leaks being far more forgiving than roof leaks; non-penetrating ridge and pitched-roof mounts saddle the ridge with weighted frames; and on flat roofs, ballasted sled mounts sit on protection mats exactly like their solar cousins. Old mounts and removals

Every neighborhood roof carries the archaeology, dead dishes from three providers ago, abandoned antenna masts, and the leak inheritance they represent: their lags back out, their caulk is long expired, and their removal is routinely botched into open holes under a smear of goop. Proper removal treats each hole as the roofing repair it is: fasteners out, damaged shingles replaced per the repair craft, membrane patched, or on tired fields, holes documented for the coming re-roof. Can I mount Starlink on my roof without leaks?

The overlap of good-signal and good-roofing spots is almost always large enough to satisfy both.

Do satellite dish installations void roof warranties?

They can complicate them: unauthorized penetrations are a classic warranty dispute trigger, especially on metal systems and under workmanship coverage, the gap-between-warranties problem of the warranty guide. Flashed, documented, structure-hit mounting defends well; the van-visit lag-and-caulk special defends poorly. On standing seam, clamp mounts sidestep the issue entirely.

What should happen to old roof mounts?
