Roof jacks and planks: standing room on a slope

Roof jacks (roof brackets) are steel angles that nail temporarily under shingle courses to hold a plank, building a level standing shelf across a pitch too steep to walk, the platform system that makes 8/12-and-up work possible at all, per the slope zones of our pitch chart. The craft is in the details that make them removable and safe: nailed with 16d nails into rafters, not just deck, through the shingle nailing zone so the holes hide under the course above; planks rated for the span (scaffold-grade, not fence boards) and cleated at the ends; rows staged up the slope as work climbs; and removal that lifts the shingle, pulls or drives the nails, and seals, leaving no trace, the same lift-and-reseal touch as our shingle repair guide. Ladder discipline: where falls actually start

Most roof accidents are ladder accidents, and the discipline is unglamorous and absolute: extension ladder at the 4-to-1 angle (a quarter of the working height out from the wall), feet on solid ground or footed against kick-out, three feet of rail above the eave so there is something to hold stepping on and off (the transition is the fall moment), tied off or staked at the top, and never side-loaded, move the ladder, not your reach.
