What is drip edge?

Drip edge is a strip of angled metal flashing installed along the edges of a roof, the eaves and the rakes, where the roofing meets the open air. Its shape is simple but purposeful: it extends out slightly beyond the roof edge and bends downward, with a lower lip that projects away from the fascia. That small profile does an important job, controlling exactly where water goes as it runs off the edge of the roof. It is usually aluminum, sometimes galvanized steel or copper, and comes in long lengths installed continuously along every edge of the roof.

Despite being one of the smallest and least expensive components of a roof, drip edge is one of those details that separates a properly finished roof from a merely adequate one. It sits right at the transition between the roof and the rest of the house, a spot where water naturally wants to cling, wick backward and find its way into the structure, and it exists specifically to prevent that. Why drip edge matters

The core problem drip edge solves is water clinging to the underside of the roof edge. Because of surface tension, water running off a roof does not simply fall straight down, it tends to curl back and cling to whatever it is running over, wicking backward under the shingles and down the fascia board behind the gutter. Over time, that backward-clinging water rots the wooden fascia, soaks the edge of the roof deck, and can work its way into the soffit and the structure, all at the very edge where the gutter is supposed to be carrying water safely away. Drip edge interrupts this by projecting the water outward and downward, past the fascia and cleanly into the gutter, so it goes where it should instead of clinging back into the wood.

This makes drip edge a small part with an outsized protective role, especially at the eaves where the gutter sits and water concentrates. It keeps the fascia and deck edge dry, helps the gutter actually catch the runoff, and closes a gap where wind-driven rain and pests could otherwise get under the roofing. It also gives the shingles a clean, supported edge to overhang rather than an unsupported lip that can droop and crack. For so small and cheap a component, the amount of edge rot and gutter-related water damage it prevents is considerable, which is exactly why building codes increasingly require it.

What happens to a roof edge without drip edge

Older roofs, and roofs installed by installers cutting corners, are sometimes missing drip edge entirely, and the consequences show up right at the edge. Without it, runoff wicks back under the shingle edge and behind the gutter, and the fascia board, the horizontal board the gutter is attached to, begins to rot from the constant moisture. As the fascia softens, the gutter’s attachment weakens, and the edge of the roof deck, unprotected, starts to deteriorate too. Types and profiles of drip edge

Drip edge comes in a few standard profiles, named for the letters their cross-sections resemble, and while the differences are technical, it helps to know they exist. The most common is Type C, an L-shaped profile with a simple angled face and a lower lip, straightforward and widely used. Type D (sometimes called T-style) has an extra outward flare at the bottom that projects the water even farther from the fascia, and it is often preferred for the extra protection it gives. There are also gutter-apron and hemmed-edge variations designed for specific eave and gutter setups. The right profile depends on the roof and the edge, and a good roofer selects it accordingly.

Beyond profile, drip edge varies in material, aluminum is the common, corrosion-resistant standard, with galvanized steel and copper used in specific situations, and in color, since it is visible along the roof edge and is often matched to the roof or trim. How drip edge should be installed

Getting drip edge right is as much about placement as presence, because the same strip of metal installed in the wrong order fails to protect the roof. The correct sequence differs between the eaves and the rakes, and it matters. At the eaves (the lower, horizontal edges where the gutter is), the drip edge goes on first, directly on the deck, with the underlayment lapped over the top of it, so any water on the underlayment runs out over the drip edge rather than behind it. At the rakes (the sloped side edges), the order reverses: the underlayment goes down first and the drip edge over it, so water is directed out over the edge. This eaves-under, rakes-over sequence is a small detail that determines whether the drip edge actually works.

The metal should also be lapped at the joints so water cannot get between sections, fastened at proper intervals, and coordinated with the gutter so runoff is delivered into it rather than behind it. Drip edge and gutter apron: how they work together

At the eaves, drip edge works hand in hand with the gutter, and a related component called a gutter apron often comes up in the same breath. A gutter apron is essentially a drip edge with a longer, more downturned lower leg, shaped specifically to reach down into the gutter and guarantee that runoff is delivered inside it rather than dripping behind it. On many roofs, the eave drip edge and the gutter relationship are set up so that water leaving the roof edge is projected cleanly over the back lip of the gutter and into the trough, which is the whole point: to prevent the water from curling back against the fascia. When the drip edge is too short or installed so that water can still track behind the gutter, the result is the same fascia rot the drip edge was meant to prevent, which is why the interaction between the edge metal and the gutter matters as much as the drip edge itself.

This is one reason drip edge, gutters and fascia are best thought of, and worked on, as a single roof-edge system rather than separate parts. On an existing roof that is not being replaced, retrofitting drip edge is more limited, since sliding metal under already-sealed shingles and underlayment without disturbing them is difficult and can do more harm than good if forced. In some cases a roofer can carefully add or supplement edge protection, or address a specific problem area, but a full, correct drip edge installation really belongs with the roofing.
