Felt versus synthetic underlayment
Asphalt-saturated felt
The traditional underlayment, a paper or fiberglass mat saturated with asphalt, sold in 15-pound and heavier 30-pound weights. It is inexpensive and has protected roofs for generations, but it is heavier, tears more easily, can wrinkle when it gets wet, and degrades faster than modern alternatives. Ice-and-water shield: the specialized underlayment
