Notice that a small 8 by 8 or 8 by 10 patch still needs two to three bundles once you round up, because you cannot buy a fraction of a bundle and you want offcuts to spare. For a whole roof, always add the waste factor on top of the field count in this table.
Adjusting for roof pitch
The footprint of your house understates the roof area because the roof is sloped, and the steeper the slope, the bigger the difference. To convert footprint area to actual roof area, multiply by a pitch factor: roughly 1.05 for a low slope, about 1.12 for a common medium pitch, 1.25 for a fairly steep roof, and up to 1.4 or more for a very steep roof. Estimating the other materials, not just shingles
Shingles get all the attention, but a roof needs a whole set of supporting materials, and they are all estimated from the same square count. The point is that a complete material list flows from two numbers: the roof area in squares for the field materials, and the linear footage of edges and peaks for the trim materials. Triangular sections, like the faces of a hip roof, use the standard one half base times height formula.
