How the math works, and where it stops working
All roof math stands on two ideas. A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface, the industry’s pricing unit, explained in our measuring guide. And the pitch multiplier converts flat footprint into true sloped area: a roof rising 6 inches per 12 of run is 11.8 percent longer along the slope than on the plan, so its factor is 1.118, the trigonometry our pitch guide unpacks. Footprint, times factor, times price per square, plus waste: that skeleton underlies every quote you will ever receive.

How accurate is a roof cost calculator?
Good for a planning range, typically within 20 to 30 percent, because it prices area and material tier but cannot see complexity, tear-off layers, decking condition, flashing work or local labor rates. Treat the output as a sanity check on budgets and bids, and get a measured, itemized estimate for the real figure.
What is a roofing square?
100 square feet of roof surface, the unit the industry prices in. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares. Note it measures roof surface, not home footprint: the pitch multiplier converts between the two, which is exactly what the squares calculator on this page does.
How do I measure my roof pitch?
In the attic, hold a level 12 inches horizontally from a rafter and measure straight down to it at the far end: that many inches of rise per 12 of run is your pitch (6 inches means 6/12). The pitch calculator converts any rise-and-run pair into pitch, degrees and the area multiplier estimators use.
How many shingle bundles per square?
Three bundles per square for standard architectural shingles, so a 24-square roof is about 72 bundles before waste. Add 10 to 20 percent waste for cuts, starters and caps depending on roof complexity, the bundles calculator applies exactly that arithmetic.
Why do quotes differ from the calculator?
Because quotes price what calculators cannot see: cut-up complexity, layers to tear off, rotted decking allowances, flashing and ventilation work, access difficulty and regional labor. A quote meaningfully outside the calculator range in either direction deserves an explanation, which an itemized scope provides line by line.
